“I couldn’t resist”
As a resident of Jackson, trail running is my favorite sport. However, I couldn’t resist the challenge of running the Boston Marathon. Boston is a city of ardent sports fans, and it shows in the support of folks along the 26.2 mile route through their neighborhoods. Race participants will tell you that part of the experience is the cheering crowds motivating racers each step of the way, no matter how fatiguing the race becomes. It is uplifting and showcases the electric spirit of the community. It’s a running atmosphere I couldn’t resist.
Over the past year, I embarked on a training regimen to prepare for the event. My training was mostly dictated by weather, especially our extreme winters. I ran up Snow King, and Cache Creek, and on snowier days, you could find me training in the local gyms. While I wasn’t always training in ideal conditions, it was a good way to ward off the doldrums of a long season of darkness, snow and ice. The reward of all the training time spent was running in Boston and feeling pretty good during, and after, the race.
The Gear
Being part of the Skinny Skis team, I was able to train with a variety of products that I have learned about in the store. Training with these products helped me narrow down what to use on race day.
The day of the race, the weather was variable and I knew I needed to bring all the necessities with me. For me, shoes had to be Hoka One One. They’re great for running 26.2 miles on pavement, or training on the trails around Jackson.
My Nathan Peak Insulated Belt was perfect for holding my extra layers and nutrition all while keeping my hands free.
The Patagonia Women’s Houdini Jacket was all I needed for an extra layer. The jacket folds into itself, making it lightweight and easy to pack. This weather-resistant jacket was the extra layer I needed on that Spring morning and during the race.
I haven’t decided if I’ll do another marathon, but I do know I’ll enjoy running on our beautiful trails around Jackson this summer.
